About Backseat Runner

Every long drive has a second story running alongside the car. This game is that story.

Backseat Runner is a browser-based endless runner played from the back seat of a family car. You sit beside the window while the world slides past outside, and a hero of your choosing runs along the sidewalk, fence line and power cables in step with the traffic. Tap to jump, tap twice to double jump, swipe down to duck or drop off a wire, and swipe up to climb. The longer you stay alive, the faster the road moves and the wilder the scenery gets, from quiet suburbs to downtown blocks and highway overpasses.

The game is built for kids first, and for the grown-ups who remember staring out of a rainy window inventing exactly this. There are more than five hundred runners to collect across themed packs, every one of them drawn in the same chunky toy-like style, plus a cabinet of tiered medals to chase from Bronze to Diamond and a global leaderboard where the best distance in the world sits at the top.

Backseat Runner is made independently by a small team of parents, illustrators and game developers who grew up on road trips and still judge a route by how good the window seat was. Nothing is installed and nothing needs a download: it runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, and a run takes a minute, which is exactly the length of the ride to school.

Every run is stored against your account so your medals, runners and personal bests follow you between devices. No ads interrupt a run, and the game never asks a child for anything beyond signing in.
